The Boston Prostate Cancer Walk began as a grassroots event in December of 2000. Members of the Longwood Medical Area Prostate Cancer Support Group decided that they wanted to do something about prostate cancer. The goal of this group was to raise funds to help educate men about prostate cancer, increase awareness about the need for regular screening and provide financial support for prostate cancer research. Under the leadership of co-chairs, Stan Klein and Dr. Jeffrey Steinberg, an all-volunteer committee was formed and they successfully conducted the first prostate cancer walk on June 15th, 2001. Hundreds of walkers came out to support their cause and they were able to raise close to $135,000 in their first year. People came together to walk in friendship, joy and camaraderie with a common goal… increasing awareness and raising funds for prostate cancer. Over the next 10 years, this all-volunteer group of men and women raised thousands of dollars and brought together hundreds of men to further the cause.
In 2011, the Boston Prostate Cancer Walk became a project of the Cancer Resource Foundation, Inc. With continued support and leadership from Stan Klein and the volunteer committee the event persevered. As the committee contemplated expansion strategies to engage younger families and supporters, a few changes were necessary. The committee decided to add a 5K race to the event. This would not be possible at the historic venue of the Boston Common, so a new venue was selected. The event moved to Boston College in 2013 and then to Newton City Hall in 2015.
The course route will include the historic Heartbreak Hill which is part of the Boston Marathon route. The event will include a 5K run, 5K walk, and a 1 mile Family Fun walk. New in 2015, was the addition of a Kids Superhero Dash (a 200 yd run for kids under 9). This year's event will include family fun activities, prostate cancer education and lots of support and camaraderie. Join the fun!
The Cancer Resource Foundation partnered with a national prostate cancer nonprofit leader to expand its reach and impact in 2015. Partnering with ZERO -The End of Prostate Cancer will allow the event to continue to expand and grow. The ZERO Prostate Cancer Run Walk series includes 42 events across the country. Our mutual goal is to increase awareness and support for prostate cancer in Massachusetts and across the country. Half of the funds raised at this event will stay in Massachusetts and the rest will support ZERO's national efforts to improve care but supporting patient assistance programs, funding research for prostate cancer and supporting education and awareness about the disease.
In the past, the event has funded 63 different prostate cancer research projects and 52 prostate cancer awareness projects in Massachusetts. The following institutions and organizations have received funding from the Boston Prostate Cancer Walk throughout the years:
